My daughter would have loved this book, December 23, 2008
By Charles Ashbacher (top reviewer with Amazon.com)  (Marion, Iowa United States)
As someone who read hundreds of books to his daughter when she was young, I learned quickly that the theme of a children's book
must be simple to be understood. If the images are colorful and attractive in structure, the message can be a little more complicated.
This book is one that my daughter would have loved, she would have insisted that I read and reread it until I was very tired of it.
Roly-poly is the name given to the creatures with 7 pairs of legs that roll into a ball when they consider themselves threatened.
Related to crabs and lobsters, they live in areas of moist vegetation. Ralphina is a roly-poly that works very hard to manipulate the soil
so that the flowers will grow well to make sure that she will be noticed. When the boy comes out to pick fresh tulips for his mommy,
he notices Ralphina and they become good friends. This makes Ralphina very happy and she goes back to work making the garden
even more colorful.
This book is one where there is some science wrapped up in a basic, understandable story about being liked as the creature you are.
Until I read this book, I did not know that the roly-polys are genetically related to crustaceans, so my knowledge of science was
expanded. Given that I was a biology major in college and have maintained an interest in the field, that is not a trivial thing. This is a
good, wholesome and educational book written at just the right level.

By  Marci Twain (New York, NY USA) January 1, 2009:
Young female bug wants to get acquainted with the little boy that lives near the garden she inhabits. She gets her way eventually.
I loved it. Great story. Great colorful illustrations. Great text. And great integration of the text and the illustrations.
I once knew a dog named Ralphina. Now I've read a story about a little garden bug named Ralphina. It's not exactly your garden variety
of female names. But it made a good main character for this book.
This book is one that I'm sure kids will like to have read to them. While listening I bet they will thoroughly enjoy the illustrations that
help them understand what they are listening to. Also, there are some bug facts included in this kids' book. So the book is
educational, too. 5 stars!
PS. This book was both written and illustrated by the same person. Quite talented I must say!

In this charming story, Ralphina, the roly-poly, lives in a garden with her mom. Ralphina notices the boy who lives inside the house and
wants to be his friend. So to get his attention, Ralphina, digs in the garden to help the tulips bloom. When the little boy sees the pretty
tulips, he comes to pick one for his mom and sees Ralphina there. The boy, named Alec, and Ralphina quickly become friends. She
teachers him fun facts about roly-polies like herself. And Ralphina isn't lonely anymore because she now has made a friend.
Ralphina, the Roly-Poly is a wonderful children's book, with sweet a story and beautiful illustrations. At the end of the book there's fun
facts about roly-polies and rainbows. Author Claudia Chandler, does a great job in writing the story and illustrating it too.

WRITTEN BY THE EDITOR OF THE MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW ONLINE MAGAZINE:
MBR: Children's Bookwatch, July 2008
Highly recommended for public library collections as well as for children's bookshelves.
Ralphina, the Roly-Poly is Written and illustrated by elementary school teacher Claudia Chandler
Ralphina, the Roly-Poly is a cheery children's picture book about a roly-poly (also known as "potato bug", "sow bug" or "pillbug") who
befriends a young boy. She teaches him amazing things about roly-polys, such as how they roll up into a ball to protect themselves,
and how they're related to crustaceans such as crabs. The whimsical, brightly colored illustrations add an upbeat touch to this
enjoyable picture book for any child who has ever noticed a curious, rolled-up bug and wanted to learn more.
